Dear Families and Friends,
This term we have been focusing on explicit teaching of social skills at the point of need of each community. We have identified through student voice and observations, what the particular needs are and how we can learn effective ways of being successful in our communication and engagement with others.
Our Foundation Community of Galilee, is focusing on ‘What makes a good friend?’ and some outcomes from the Victorian Curriculum the teachers are planning from include:
- Practise the skills required to include others and make friends with peers, teachers and other adults
- Name and practise basic skills required to work collaboratively with peers
In our Year Four Community of Bethany, the focus is on conflict resolution and some outcomes include:
- Identify conflicts that may occur in peer groups and suggest possible causes and resolutions
- Describe the ways in which similarities and differences can affect relationships
In our Year 6 Community of Jericho, the focus is on building resilience and some outcomes include:
- Reflect on how personal strengths have assisted in achieving success at home, at school or in the community
- Describe what it means to be confident, adaptable and persistent and why these attributes are important in dealing with new or challenging situations
These skills have also supported our Year 6 Community as they have engaged with other schools in our current Inter-school Sports event that covers a number of weeks where students are representing their school in AFL football, Netball or Newcombe.
There are three weeks left of competition and if you have the opportunity to visit during these times to see the students representing our school, you are most welcome. Please sign in on arrival at the front office.
In Week 4 we introduced to our students a child friendly version of our St Thomas the Apostle consequences framework as a natural response to behaviours that do not align with the School Wide Expectations of :- SAFETY
- RESPECT
- LEARNING
Please find the framework below for your reference. This will be displayed in all classrooms and learning spaces for students and teachers to refer to. If you require any clarity on how this is being implemented, please ask your child’s teacher.
Have a wonderful week everyone.
Kindest regards,
Jen Gulavin
Parents and their children participated in the Workshops this week, in preparation for their First Holy Communion. There was lots of discussion and enthusiasm around the topics, really making it an enjoyable evening. Many thanks to the teachers in the Bethany community who stayed at school into the evening who helped make it a success too.
We looked at how the parts of the Mass can be divided up into themes:
- We Gather
- We Listen
- We Give Thanks
- We Receive
- We Go
This is important to understand because the Mass aka ‘the Eucharistic celebration’ is built around the gift that Jesus gives us, in the Last Supper. Most people are familiar with the Leonardo Da Vinci depiction of the Last Supper. It’s an awesome bit of art but this interpretation seems to dominate our understanding of this major event. We know that when Jesus’ community gathered for the Passover celebration that it would have involved men, women and children because it was a family and friends’ sort of gathering (see painting above). Da Vinci focuses on Jesus and the Apostles in his famous painting. If all we do is remember this painting, this can limit our understanding of who is invited to the ‘breaking of bread’. In fact, the term Last Supper is a bit misleading too, because the ‘Supper’ is re-lived each and every time we partake in the Mass. It’s probably more accurate to say it was Jesus’ Last Supper with his friends and family before he died. We can be part of the Supper over and over again because he is really present at the gathering of the Mass.
